They are different ages and come from different backgrounds, but a group of 18 Sedalia residents has the Elk’s Lodge and Missouri Lottery in common – and now, they’ve been named the Missouri Lottery’s October Team of the Month, as part of the Lottery’s ongoing Captains Club promotion.
The “Sedalia Elks” team began playing as a group about four years ago, according to Ginger Hofheins, who serves as the team’s Lottery coordinator.
The team consists of: Rita Baslee, Don Brooks, Dave Dalgran, Terry Emo, Dennis Gerken, Cathy Hemme, Larry Hemme, Ginger Hofheins, Ray Kocsis, Ron Loucks, Harvey Meyer, Jim Muin, Kenny Norton, Dean Roe, Jamie Schumaker, Stanley Vaughn, Bill Wallace and Allen Whittall, all of Sedalia.
“We started when Sedalia Elks #125 put in the Lotto machine,” Hofheins explained. “We play $1 per person, twice a week, for Wednesday and Saturday drawings. We mostly buy Powerball, but occasionally we mix Lotto and Mega Millions in the pot. Our numbers are done by Quick Picks, and our tickets are only bought at the Sedalia Elks Lodge.”
She said for wins that work out to be more than $5 per person, the group divides its winnings. For amounts that average less than $5 per person, the money is reinvested into the next drawing.
“Our dream, if we ever win big, is to take a stretch limo to Jefferson City to collect our winnings,” said Hofheins. “Then we would split up our winnings to pay our bills, and there’s been talk to vacation together – maybe Jamaica, Mexico or Hawaii.
“Somebody has to win; it might as well be us,” she said of her team’s approach to playing. “But our advice to other teams is not to bet the house. We only play what we can afford to lose.”
As the Lottery’s Team of the Month, the “Sedalia Elks” team will receive a prize package of Lottery merchandise, as well as a feature on the Lottery’s official website at Molottery.com.
