Minnesota Couple Wins $200,000 In Missouri

Story Photo audio icon Vernon Sanow Jr. of Garvin, Minn., drives a truck for a living. He bought some Powerball tickets in Missouri and ended up winning a $200,000 prize. He matched all five white-ball numbers in the Aug. 20 Powerball drawing on a ticket he purchased at Mr. Fuel, 11 Highway W, in Foristell. His wife, Cynthia, joined him this week and claimed the prize on Sept. 27.

“I usually ride along about twice a year,” Cynthia said. “This is my fall foliage trip.”

She expected dazzling views but never thought this trip would include such a surprise.

“They (tickets) kind of kept falling out of his visor because he had so many stacked up,” explained Cynthia. “He finally decided, ‘Well, I’ll just check them,’ because he was waiting on me at the fuel stop. He called me over there, kind of shaking, and goes, ‘Look at that.’

“We’re still stunned,” she continued. “We really just can’t believe it, because like I said, the most I’ve ever won is $100.”

The couple won on a Quick Pick ticket. The winning numbers for the Aug. 20 drawing were:  2, 17, 23, 28, 47 and the Powerball was 36.

Cynthia said the money would be saved for retirement and might be used to fund a vacation, “not in a truck.”

“He owes me a Hawaii trip yet, so maybe he’ll cash that in,” she surmised.

The Sanows don’t spend a lot playing the Lottery, but they’ll continue to play.

“We’re greedy,” joked Cynthia. “We wanted to win big. I’ve played two sets of numbers for so long, I don’t dare not play them.”

They might also consider adding Power Play the next time they are in Missouri.

Powerball is a multi-lottery Draw Game with jackpots that start at $20 million. For an extra $1 at the time of purchase, players can add Power Play to their ticket and multiply any non-jackpot prizes by a Power Play number selected during the drawing. The second-level prize of $200,000 automatically becomes $1 million with Power Play.
