Independence Woman Claims First 'Silver 7s' Top Prize

For fun at Santi-Cali-Gon Days, Lueta Langley had her photo taken with an oversized ceremonial Lottery check, teasing that someday she would be a Missouri Lottery winner. Within days, Langley found herself at the Lottery’s Independence office picking up a very real check after she uncovered the first $27,777 top prize on a “Silver 7’s” Scratchers ticket.

Explaining the chain of events that led to her win, she said she was getting groceries on Labor Day when she decided to cash in a winning Scratchers ticket and pick up some more.

“I put the groceries in the truck, and I said, ‘I’ll go ahead and scratch these tickets while I’m here,’” she recounted. “Then I sat in the truck screaming, ‘No way! No way!’”

Langley went back inside the store, where she asked someone at the customer service desk to look at her ticket.

“I said, ‘Is this what I think it is?’ They thought I was about to pass out… and I was,” she laughed.

“I cried all the way home,” she continued. “When I got there, my husband thought I must have wrecked the truck.”

The retiree had decided not to call her husband to provide a heads-up about their good fortune.

“Heck, no, I didn’t call,” she said. “I wanted to see his face!”

Silver 7’s” is a $2 ticket that officially began Aug. 13. More than $6.6 million in prizes, including six more top prizes of $27,777, remain unclaimed in the game.

Langley purchased her winning ticket at Price Chopper, 16611 E. 23rd St., in Independence.
