Springfield Area Players Named Lottery Team of the Month

A group of Springfield area friends has been selected as the Missouri Lottery’s September Team of the Month, as part of the Lottery’s ongoing Captains Club promotion. Calling themselves “The Springfield Scratchers – Party of Four,” the team has been in place and playing Powerball together since the late 1980s.

The team consists of:  Cynthia Clayton and Michele Hicks, both of Springfield; Patty Smith of Fair Grove; and Karen Herron of Ozark.

“The two original players are Patty Smith and myself,” explained Clayton, who serves as the team’s lottery coordinator. “She says she is not ‘lucky’ without me. Karen Herron was added to the group about nine years ago, and Michele Hicks is the newbie and has been with us less than a year.”

The women pool their money together for Powerball drawings held on Wednesday and Saturday nights, generally opting for Quick Pick tickets. Clayton joked that they also play Scratchers games “whenever we feel the itch to scratch!”

“There are no rules for our team, except to talk about the Lottery when we get together and whether we purchased any winning tickets that were not purchased together,” Clayton said. “If any of us wins money, we buy an appetizer at dinner or something to share. If anyone wins, we hear all about it!

“We all agree that we will take one heck of a ‘Gal Pal Vacation’ when we hit a big score. Everything else is just icing on the cake,” she added.

For other lottery teams, or to those thinking of forming a lottery players’ group, Clayton said, “Why not play? If you buy a ticket, you have already won the thrill of the possibilities the tickets holds for you – of winning big and dreaming about what to do with all the lovely loot!”

As the Lottery’s Team of the Month, “The Springfield Scratchers – Party of Four” team will receive a prize package of Lottery merchandise, as well as a feature on the Lottery’s official website at Molottery.com.
