Illinois Woman Crosses State Line and Collects a $30,000 Prize
Illinois residents Cheryl and Dennis Toenjes frequently travel across state lines into Missouri for gasoline and Missouri Lottery tickets. While making a fuel stop at Phillips MPC, 12451 N. Highway 51 in Perryville, the pair decided to try their luck on a “Money Tripler” Scratchers game.
While the Toenjes drove back to their home in Evansville, Ill., Cheryl, 57, said, “This can’t be” as she uncovered a $30,000 prize.
“I made him pull over on the side of the road,” she began. “I said, ‘Honey, look at this! Is this real?’”
Her husband of 20 years replied, “I think we better turn around and get that checked.”
After returning to Phillips MPC and confirming the win with a clerk, the couple began their sleepless night of waiting for Lottery offices to open the following morning.
When asked about plans for the windfall, Cheryl noted that they “have a lot of ideas,” including replacing their washing machine, helping their son with college expenses and making home improvements.
She joked that when she won $5,000 on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers game several years ago, her husband said the win was “once in a lifetime.”
While claiming the $30,000 prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, Dennis confessed over laughter that he’s “going to have to take that back now.”
,” a $2 game with a top prize of $30,000, officially began on Jan. 22.
