Smithton Man Wins $10,000 Playing Mega Millions

Story Photo Terry Turley buys Missouri Lottery tickets for co-workers at Hayes Lemmerz in Sedalia. But it was an unplanned stop and purchase of a Mega Millions ticket that resulted in a $10,000 prize for him alone.
“We play Powerball together,” said Turley about the players group he captains. “But I’m sure they’ll be interested in Mega Millions now.”
The 51-year-old was on his way to work when he noticed that he had time for an unplanned stop. Turley, a resident of nearby Smithton, said he turned “right instead of left” and ended up at Cork’n Bottle, 3806 Highway 50 East, in Sedalia. The first-time Lottery winner said he regularly plays his own numbers, but he decided to get an extra $5 Quick Pick. Since he bought a ticket good for two drawings, the random decision resulted in a ticket that matched four white-ball numbers and the Megaball® in the July 5 drawing, winning him $10,000.
He purchased the ticket before the July 1 drawing for an estimated $105 million jackpot. A winning ticket was sold in Virginia, dropping the July 5 jackpot to the base prize of $12 million. He might not have purchased a ticket for that drawing.
“I’m glad I did,” said Turley.
Turley has lots of ideas on how to spend the money. He said he would donate 10 percent to the Humane Society, noting the recent loss of a beloved dog. Some money will go toward a new washing machine, a request by his wife, Judy. An avid deer hunter, some might be used for new gear.
But most would be saved for building a new house on his property in Smithton.
“Where our house sits now is probably the most logical place,” explained Turley, who wants to save enough to build a new home in the same location and leave the remaining 20 acres pristine for hunting.
Turley intends to continue to play the Lottery, and he expects renewed fervor from his co-workers. He offered some advice for other players.
“Have fun. Don’t play more than you can afford. And never say never. It happened to me,” he stated.
Mega Millions is a multi-lottery Draw Game with jackpots that start at $12 million. Drawings take place on Tuesday and Friday each week. In addition to nine different ways to win prizes, players can add the Megaplier® option at the time of purchase to multiply any non-jackpot prizes by a Megaplier® number selected during the drawing.
