Joke Turns True: Camdenton Woman Wins $5,000 Scratchers Prize

When Christine Canals of Camdenton asked her daughter to double-check her “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers ticket, they both laughed when she teased her mother that she had actually won more than the $500 prize she thought she’d scored. Their laughter quickly turned to celebration when, upon taking the ticket back to the retailer to have it scanned, they realized it was true – she had actually won $5,000.

“I can’t believe this,” Canals, 55, said, as she presented her winning ticket at the Jefferson City headquarter offices of the Missouri Lottery.

She said she’s a rather routine Scratchers player with a strong preference for a couple of games in particular.

“I always do ‘Crossword’ and ‘Battleship,’” she said.

Still uncertain as to how she’ll spend her winnings, Canals said one thing she hopes to do is buy a new couch for her daughter, Lutana.

The winning ticket was purchased at Lake Oasis Convenience Store, 321 N. Highway 5, in Camdenton.

Bonus Crossword,” which officially began on July 2, still has 11 top prizes of $50,000 remaining, as well as thousands of other prizes ranging from $3 to $5,000.  Available prize information on any current Scratchers game can be found by visiting the Missouri Lottery’s Scratchers page.
