Tamela Griffith, 50, of St. Louis (*63138) said she was “proud of being half a century” and even made a special wish as she blew out her birthday candle in March. Four months later, her wish came true as she made claim on the first top-prize winning “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers game – a belated birthday gift worth $50,000.
“When I blew out my birthday candle, I said, ‘This would be a good year to win the lottery,’” she recounted with a laugh. “Then, just this past Friday, I was sitting on the patio, and I thought, ‘Any time now would be good.’”
The next night, she purchased the winning ticket at QuikTrip, 11802 Lusher Road, in St. Louis.
She laughed again as she explained that she initially didn’t realize how many words she had on the ticket, thanks to her thumb, which covered up the magic last word that would make her prize amount leap from $5,000 to $50,000.
“Oh, yeah,” she said, when asked if she remembered what that word was. “It was TON.”
“Bonus Crossword,” which officially began on July 2, still has 11 top prizes of $50,000 remaining, as well as thousands of other prizes ranging from $3 to $5,000. Available prize information on any current Scratchers game can be found by visiting the Missouri Lottery’s Scratchers page.
