When Jimmie Baker dropped off his young son at summer school on the morning of June 23, the part-time Walmart cashier had no idea that he’d end up going right back to get him so that the two could head to Jefferson City to claim a $250,000 Lottery prize.
“Yeah, it’s not how you expect your day to go… but in a good way,” Baker laughed.
After dropping his son off at school, he had gone to Panthers Mart, 1409 S. Main St. in Palmyra, to get gas and pick up a couple of Lottery tickets. As it turned out, the “$250,000 Mega Cash” Scratchers ticket he selected held the top prize of $250,000.
“I scratched it off there inside the store,” he explained. “At first I thought I looked at it wrong, but then I guess I must have turned a little bit white.”
Baker showed the store owner and even called his mother because he “wanted another set of eyes on it” to make sure he wasn’t seeing things.
“My son was OK with getting out of school the rest of the day,” he said with a smile, as he shared his plans for his unexpected good fortune.
“He’s getting a pool and a new swing set,” he began. “Then we’re going to pay some bills, and we may try to find a home with some small acreage.”
“$250,000 Mega Cash ” is a $10 ticket, offering a top prize of $250,000. The game officially started Jan. 31, 2007, and still has four top prizes – as well as thousands of prizes between $10 and $20,000 – remaining in play.
