Grocery Shopper Bags Luxury Cruise and Bride-To-Be
In a matter of minutes, Joel Steiner of Washington went from a bachelor, who had never been on a cruise, to a man with a fiancé and two tickets aboard a Royal Caribbean International® ship for a seven-night Caribbean vacation.
The story began when Steiner, 34, stopped for groceries at Schnucks Market, 2073 Washington Crossing in Washington, in early June.
“I went to get groceries, and then I forgot a bag,” Steiner recalled. “I went back to get that bag. I bought two $5 tickets.”
The electrician and first-time Missouri Lottery winner purchased two Scratchers games – “Bass Pro Shops®” and “Missouri Lottery’s 25th Anniversary Cruise.”
It was when he returned home that the day took a life-changing turn.
“I had the ‘Bass Pro’ one, and I gave her (girlfriend) the other one – the winner,” he explained. “I told her that I didn’t like my numbers. I scratched it off and won $10. I was like, ‘You have to win this cruise!’”
What happened next was a blur, but it ended with Steiner making plans to wed his girlfriend of three years while on the cruise he had just won.
“We were both kind of startled,” he shared over laughter.
Steiner said the couple is “thinking January” when it comes to planning their nuptials and cruise.
