When Dale Woodring turned on his television the morning of April 1, he was stunned to see the Show Me Cash numbers from the previous night’s drawing. According to his screen, Woodring, a maintenance supervisor at the local hospital, had matched all five numbers drawn to win the $138,000 jackpot prize.
“It was April 1, so I thought something had to be wrong,” he laughed. “But the numbers matched what was on TV.”
Woodring took his ticket back to Casey’s, 2501 Miller St. in Bethany, and asked the clerk for the winning numbers from the March 31 drawing.
“I said, ‘Huh, I won, didn’t I?’” he shared of his conversation with the clerk after checking the numbers against his own ticket. “Then I said, ‘But wait, today’s April Fools’ Day, isn’t it?’ and just walked out.”
Though the clerk probably didn’t realize right away that Woodring was a jackpot winner, word “spread like wildfire” in the small town of Bethany after he stopped at Toot Toot Restaurant for a cup of coffee and shared his good news there.
According to Woodring, who admits he hadn’t bought a Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash ticket in about three months, it was definitely an April Fools’ Day to remember. Giving credit to what he describes as a last-minute decision to purchase the ticket, he now plans to pay off his mortgage and pay towards his daughter’s college education with his winnings.
Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot that starts at $50,000 and increases by at least $5,000 at each daily drawing. Woodring’s winning numbers – 8, 18, 19, 20 and 31 – were a Quick Pick selection. His ticket was the 134th Show Me Cash jackpot-winning ticket since the game began on Sept. 8, 2008.
