Wellsville Man Wins $55,000 Show Me Cash Jackpot
John Haines farms in at least two counties, so he makes regular stops at three different convenience stores in surrounding communities to visit with friends and buy Missouri Lottery tickets. The Wellsville man made a stop on March 14 at GT Express Shoppe, 4787 E. Liberty St. in Mexico, and ordered his regular, bi-weekly purchase of Mega Millions and Powerball tickets. When the clerk asked him if he played Show Me Cash, Haines almost turned down a $55,000 jackpot winning ticket.
“She said, ‘Try this new Show Me Cash,’” recalled Haines. “I said, ‘No, I’m not going to do it. I don’t play it.’”
The clerk went on to explain a new feature called EZ Match, and how Haines could win instant prizes with his Show Me Cash ticket. Having change left over from his Gatorade purchase, he decided to give it a try.
Not only did he win $2 instantly, which paid for his ticket, Haines also got a Bonus Raffle ticket for the “D.I.Y. Dough” promotion, along with his ticket for that evening’s Show Me Cash drawing, which would eventually match all five winning numbers. He became a dedicated Show Me Cash player the following day after returning to the store.
“I went in there to get my Gatorade like I do about every morning, and she said, ‘Let me see your Lottery tickets,’” recounted Haines. After hearing that the store had sold the winning ticket, he grew even more excited when the clerk told him it was his.
“I kind of got weak in my knees, and I think I let out a scream,” Haines said with a laugh. “I’m still grinning. I’ve been grinning since 9 o’clock this morning.”
“He called me screaming, and I was scared,” added his wife Darla. “I thought he had been in an accident. Then I heard him say, ‘I hit the Lottery.’”
The Community R-VI elementary teacher shocked the class by screaming, “What! Are you sure?” followed by a “happy dance.”
Haines, 48, said the shock was overwhelming.
“How many people in Missouri play this? It’s you! It just doesn’t happen. It’s something you read about in the newspaper,” he remarked.
Haines listed a number of ideas for spending the windfall, suggesting the $55,000 prize would go in the bank until they had time to decide.
“Ten percent to the church,” offered Darla, adding that she had taken candy orders from her students.
The first order of business was a trip to Red Lobster for lunch and a gift certificate for the clerk that suggested Show Me Cash. For selling the winning ticket, GT Express Shoppe will receive a bonus equal to 1 percent of the jackpot amount.
