Maryland Heights Woman Wins Royal Caribbean Cruise
After reading about the upcoming Missouri Lottery Mall Tour, Karen Brookes of Maryland Heights decided to call her sisters and make a day of it. They gathered on Jan. 22 at St. Louis Mills for some shopping, dinner and fun.
“I called all of my sisters and said let’s have a shopping day at The Mills mall and go to dinner and see what the Missouri Lottery is doing there,” explained Brookes. “Because I’ve never been to a Missouri Lottery promotion before; I thought it would be fun.
“So we did. We all met up there, and we had a blast.”
Brookes said they would shop and return to the event area when they knew the Lottery was playing games. In addition to having a good time with her family, her day got a lot more exciting when the Lottery began announcing winners from that event’s second-chance drawing. Players had the opportunity to enter non-winning Missouri Lottery tickets purchased on site into a second-chance promotion. Twenty-five winners were selected to receive a prize of Scratchers tickets and then advanced to a grand-prize drawing with winners from the other two mall events in Kansas City and Springfield. The grand prize was a cruise package similar to the prizes offered on the “Missouri Lottery’s 25th Anniversary Cruise” Scratchers ticket.
“When they drew the 25 names at the end, my younger sister, her name was drawn first. So we were really excited. And then my name was drawn towards the end.
“So, when we went to dinner, my sister and I, who are both married, made a pact that we would take each other if one of us was drawn,” recalled Brookes.
“We made a pinky promise,” she said.
Had her husband, Tom, known that she would become the eventual winner, he may have objected. But Brookes said she would remain true to her word after finding out that she was the grand-prize winner.
“My sister was watching on the Internet. And so she called me and said, ‘Your name is on the Internet as the grand-prize winner.’ And I’m like, ‘No way!’” she said.
Thinking that there must be some mistake, Brookes had her son search for information later that day. He confirmed her good fortune.
“I was screaming. I started crying actually. Yeah, so our husbands aren’t too happy right now, but we are really excited!”
Brookes said that she has been playing the “Anniversary Cruise” ticket ever since.
“Yeah, because if we win again, maybe we’ll take the husbands. Maybe,” she said with a laugh.
“Neither of us have ever been on a cruise, my sister or I. That’s her dream, to go on a cruise. I’m really happy that we’re going. I can’t wait,” she added.
There are still 23 cruise packages that can be won instantly on the “Missouri Lottery’s 25th Anniversary Cruise” Scratchers ticket. The cruise packages include a seven-night Caribbean cruise for two on Royal Caribbean, first-class airfare, hotel and ground transportation prior to departure, $1,000 on-board ship credit, $500 cash, a luggage set and more. The Missouri Lottery will also pay taxes on the prize, bringing the total value to more than $19,000.
