POST OFFICE WORKER WINS $25,000

Patrick McCarthy, 44, an employee of the Kansas City Post Office, can now pay of his bills and buy his 17-year-old daughter, Krystle, a new car after winning $25,000 tax paid* in the Missouri Lottery’s SHOW ME 5 game on Aug. 9. McCarthy was at QuikTrip, 5108 Northeast Vivion Road in Kansas City, getting gas when he noticed he had only one check left in his checkbook. He knew he had to get his daily Lottery tickets at QuikTrip instead of going to his regular Lottery retailer. McCarthy called the Kansas City Star for the SHOW ME 5 numbers. After realizing he could possibly be a winner, he called the Missouri Lottery to verify the numbers. "I have been playing the same numbers for a long time," said McCarthy. Those winning numbers were: 3, 13, 17, 21, and 30. * Twenty-eight percent federal and 4 percent state taxes are withheld from the total prize amount of $36,764.70 to provide $25,000 cash at the time of redemption. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may receive a refund.
