Columbia Man Wins $5,000 Scratchers Prize
A stop on the way home gave one Columbia man a pleasant surprise. First-time Lottery winner Joshua Humphrey, 23, decided to buy two Missouri Lottery “MONOPOLY™” Scratchers tickets from the Instant Ticket Vending Machine (ITVM) at Hy-Vee Food Store, 3721 W. Truman Road, in Jefferson City. The night before, he mentioned to his girlfriend that maybe he “should play the Lottery.” When he saw the vending machine, he saw his opportunity.
“On my way home from work, I just stopped into Hy-Vee to get a six-pack,” began Humphrey. “I saw one of those little red boxes over there and said, ‘Why not?’ I bought two tickets, and the first one, I won.”
Humphrey didn’t get any beer, and he had to stop on the way home to confirm he was holding a $5,000 winning ticket. He credits following through on his “feeling” with his good fortune.
“I’ve probably only spent $60 on Scratchers tickets my whole life. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
When asked if this win would spur him to buy more tickets, Humphrey said it wouldn’t.
“I wouldn’t want to jinx it,” he said about his luck.
Humphrey, an electrician, said the money might fund a trip to Mexico or be used as a down-payment on a truck.
is a $3 game that officially began Dec. 4, 2010. The ticket features 10 top prizes of $50,000, none of which have yet been claimed. Track prizes remaining for this and every Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket here at Molottery.com.
