Linda Smith of Bowling Green walked into a local convenience store on New Year’s Eve expecting to simply buy a couple of Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets. To her surprise, she walked out of the store with a $5,000 gift for the new year.
“Yeah, it was a happy New Year,” she said.
According to Smith, 59, she had been playing the Lottery’s “Season’s Greetings” Scratchers game since it officially began Oct. 23, 2010.
“I had been playing that ticket and hadn’t seen anything,” she said, explaining that she had not won on her previous purchases. “I thought, ‘I’ll play two more,’ and them two were winners!”
The first ticket Smith scratched off contained a $10 prize; the second revealed the $5,000 win – a sight she wanted her husband to verify before she would really believe it.
“I said, ‘Raymond, come here and tell me if I’m seeing this right,’” she laughed. “The girls in the store all had to jump up and down and congratulate me, too.”
Smith purchased her winning “Season’s Greetings” ticket at Abel’s Quik Shop, 1220 E. Champ Clark Dr., in Bowling Green.
