Dixon Man Wins $10,000 Powerball Prize

Story Photo audio icon A security specialist at Fort Leonard Wood has stepped forward with a $10,000 winning Powerball ticket from the Dec. 18 drawing.  Osie Ichord of Dixon purchased $6 worth of Missouri Lottery Quick Pick Powerball tickets at Tommy’s Tater Patch, 103 Bridgeschool Road in Rolla, on the day of the drawing.
“I took my daughter to the airport, and I was hungry, so I stopped in there to have a hamburger,” began Ichord.  “I had $6 left over, and I had them just give me six Quick Picks.”
He found out about his good fortune the following day.
“About 11 a.m. the next morning, I stopped into one of the gas stations in St. Robert, and the young lady there said, ‘Wow, you’re a big winner.’  I said, ‘Yeah, right.  OK,’” he continued.
Other people in the store overheard the exchange and immediately began congratulating Ichord.  One woman paid for his coffee, and a local radio station employee standing in line gathered information about his win.  The news was on the radio the following day, leading to some good-natured ribbing from co-workers at Fort Leonard Wood.
“They heard about it, and they got to work before I did,” explained Ichord.   “So when I came in, they said, ‘You’re lucky’ and all this other great stuff.”
The first-time Lottery winner hasn’t been playing for long, but he immediately knew how to spend the windfall.
“We just put braces on my daughter’s teeth about six months ago, and we’re going to go ahead and pay them off” said Ichord.  “It’s something that needed to be done, so I’m glad that this is taking care of it.”
Ichord, 52, said he kept the ticket under a magnet on his refrigerator until he could make a trip to the Springfield Lottery office to claim his prize.  He said he would continue to play the Lottery.
“My goal is $5 a week on the Powerball,” he said.
But he’s already branching out to Mega Millions, especially with the current high jackpot.
“Two days ago, I played Mega Millions and won $150 on it,” Ichord said, while claiming his $10,000 prize on Dec. 30, 2010.
Powerball is a multi-lottery Numbers Game with jackpots that start at $20 million.  For an extra $1 at the time of purchase, players can add the Power Play option to multiply winnings other than the jackpot by a Power Play number selected during the drawing.
