Ring in 2011 With $242 Million!
How would you like to ring in 2011 with $242 million? You could have a chance to make some serious New Year’s resolutions by playing Mega Millions for the New Year’s Eve drawing. The jackpot has rolled to $242 million for the Dec. 31 draw, the second-largest jackpot in the game since Missouri started selling it on Jan. 31.
“There is a very good chance that someone will find out they are a multi-millionaire this New Year’s Eve,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director for the Missouri Lottery. “The drawing will be held at 10 p.m. this Friday, just before the new year. The best part is that it only takes $1 to win and change your life.”
Reardon noted that there are approximately 5,000 retail locations around the state that sell Mega Millions tickets.
“It is very similar to Powerball,” she said. “There are nine ways to win prizes, so if you don’t find yourself holding the big winning ticket, you might have won one of the eight other prizes. The overall chances of winning a prize are 1 in 40.”
Reardon added that if you don’t know how to play Mega Millions, you can ask the clerk for a Quick Pick, and the computer will pick a combination of numbers for you.
“It is so simple and so inexpensive,” she said. “But you can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket.”
Players can buy Mega Millions tickets for the drawing in Missouri up to 8:59 p.m. Friday night.
Reardon also noted that in light of the large jackpot, players should play responsibly.
“Players should only use disposable income for these purchases,” she said. “It literally only takes $1 to win.”
Since Missouri started offering the game, 10 Missouri Lottery players have won prizes of $250,000 or more, including a $1 million prize claimed by a Mansfield man in April, and $250,000 ticket sold at QuikTrip, 2601 S. 291 Highway in Independence, for last night’s drawing.
