Text Message Leads Columbia Man to $10,000 Lottery Prize

Story Photo audio icon A Columbia man credits a text message as the catalyst that led him to a $10,000 Missouri Lottery prize.  Samuel Price received a message on his cell phone stating that “money would be coming into your life.”  He generally ignores forwarded texts, but something about this particular message struck a chord.  Not only did he send it on, but he also decided to try his luck on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket.  The decision proved to be profitable for the 23-year-old.

First, he bought a “Bingo” Scratchers ticket and won $10.

“I held onto it for a few days,” he shared.

He hadn’t forgotten about the text message stating that good fortune would be coming into his life, so when he felt like the time was right, he cashed in the $10 winning ticket and bought a “Season’s Greetings” game.

“Today, I dropped my daughter off at school, and I went back to my spot and I exchanged the $10 (ticket) and decided to buy a $10 Scratchers,” he said, referring to purchasing his winning $10,000 Lottery ticket at Mosers Discount Foods, 4840 N. Highway 763, in Columbia.

“I had the strangest surreal feeling the whole time – ever since I got that text,” he noted.

“I scratched it, and the first one was a candy cane, so it was an instant (winner).  I thought it was $5.  I went to the next one, and it was another candy cane.  I thought it was another $5, so I made my $10 back.”

The ticket held a total of 20 prizes, and they were each $500.

“I was hoping to get $100, so I could go buy a Christmas present, and once I scratched that off, I couldn’t even do anything,” he recalled.  “I nervously drove home.”

“It’s going to change our lives a little bit,” he said.

His wife, Suzanne, added that the prize is “going to make everything so much easier.”

As for Price’s feelings on forwarded text messages, he will “probably send a few more on” now.

“I still can’t believe this happened to me,” he said.  “It’s amazing.”

"Season’s Greetings," a $10 game with a top prize of $250,000, officially began on Oct. 23.

Non-winning “Season’s Greeting” Scratchers tickets can be entered into the "Hi-Tech Holiday" promotion for a chance to win a $15,000 hi-tech makeover, cash and Scratchers tickets.
