Independence Man Scores First $70,000 Chiefs Ticket

In addition to celebrating a Kansas City Chiefs® win over the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, Brandon Owens was reveling in a win of his own.  On Saturday, the 35-year-old Independence man had scored the first of two $70,000 top prizes on a Missouri Lottery “Chiefs” Scratchers ticket.  He claimed his prize at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office on Nov. 29.

It was a stroke of good luck for Owens, who said he just recently started buying the “Chiefs” Scratchers tickets.

“I just noticed them and asked the guy if anyone ever wins on those,” he explained.  “He said, ‘Yeah,’ so I said, ‘Then give me one.’”

Owens scratched his ticket at home later that evening to reveal the top prize.  He said he then took the ticket back to the store where he purchased it – 7-Eleven, 11001 E. 23rd St. in Independence – to verify he had a winner.

“It’s hard to believe, right?” he said of the experience.

As for what he’ll do with the unexpected winnings, Owens said he plans to “put most of it away.”

The “Chiefs” Scratchers ticket is a $5 game that officially began Aug. 28.  In addition to winning up to $70,000 instantly, players can submit non-winning “Chiefs” Scratchers tickets into the “Chiefs Game Plan” second-chance promotion through Dec. 14.  With only the final drawing remaining, players have one last chance to win season tickets, an autographed Kansas City Chiefs® jersey, or the grand prize – 2011 Kansas City Chiefs® Founder’s Suite tickets for two, including sideline passes, hotel accommodations and $250 in spending cash.
