California Woman Makes $10,000 Memories in Missouri

Story Photo audio icon A Clovis, Calif., woman was expecting to make priceless memories while visiting her family in Missouri for Thanksgiving.  She wasn’t anticipating also taking home a $10,000 check from the Missouri Lottery.  But, that’s precisely what happened when Carmen Sheppard matched all four white-ball numbers and the Powerball in the Nov. 20 drawing.

The first-time Lottery winner said she rarely plays Powerball, but while grocery shopping at Mosers Discount Foods, 1035 Armory Road in Warrenton, with her daughter, she decided to try her luck on a $3 Quick Pick ticket.

“We don’t have Powerball in California,” she began.  “I only ever bought one other Powerball ticket in my entire life.”

When Sheppard scanned her ticket, she assumed that she had won $10.  It was while attempting to redeem the ticket that she learned that she had missed a few zeros.

Sheppard said the cashier informed her that, “It’s not $10, it’s $10,000!”

“I was really shocked!” she added.

The California resident plans to use the windfall to remodel her bathroom when she returns to the west coast.

In addition to home improvements, she noted that her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren would “celebrate with a big dinner” at the Olive Garden.

The winning Powerball numbers from the Nov. 20 drawing were:  10, 12, 38, 53, 57 and the Powerball was 1.

Powerball is a multi-state game that features jackpots starting at $20 million.  To view a list of unclaimed Powerball prizes, visit Molottery.com.
