Fishing Trip Leads Springfield Couple to $100,000 Catch
A Springfield couple reeled in a $100,000 prize before ever reaching their fishing boat on Nov. 6. Cathy and Rick Hampton were on their way to the lake, when they remembered an article they read in the newspaper that prompted them to stop at Casey’s General Store, 15581 Highway 160, in Forsyth.
“We read that a couple had won $20,000 in one of the small towns,” Cathy began. “So, we decided that we’d buy one.”
The Hamptons bought a Missouri Lottery “Pure Gold” Scratchers ticket and “started back down the road toward the boat.”
Moments later, Cathy, who had just uncovered the first $20,000 prize on the ticket, said, “Rick, pull over!”
After parking the car, the Hamptons scratched off the rest of the ticket.
“We scratched one, and we scratched two, and we scratched three,” she explained. “We thought we had won $80,000.”
The couple quickly turned their car around and drove back to Casey’s General Store. While on the way, Cathy called her son to let him know that his parents had just won $80,000. It was during the call that she “got to looking at the ticket,” and realized that they had won an additional $20,000, bringing their total prize to $100,000.
After confirming the win at the store, the couple “went fishing,” as they had planned.
“It (ticket) has been hooked to me since Saturday,” she added. “It’s been a nervous 48 hours!”
As for plans for the windfall, the Hamptons said they’ve “had a lot of hospital bills the last couple of years, and we’re thrilled to be able to pay that off.”
Cathy noted that they both “feel amazingly blessed” to have won the Lottery prize.
In addition to paying bills, the Hamptons are “hoping that we can do some good things with it (prize money).”
," a $5 Scratchers game with a top prize of $100,000, officially began on Sept. 25.
