Joplin Man's Dream Turns to $100,000 Reality

Before leaving his home on Oct. 19, a Joplin man thought to himself, “I hope I win the Lottery today.”  By 4 p.m., Joseph Thomure was at his bank placing a $100,000 winning Missouri Lottery “10X The Cash” Scratchers ticket into a safety deposit box.

“It started the day before,” the 41-year-old construction worker began.  “I bought a ticket and I won $5, so I turned that one in and got another.  I won another $5.  I traded that one in for a third ticket and won $15.”

Thomure decided to try his luck on a fourth “10X The Cash” ticket the following day when he stopped at Take-A-Break, 417 S. Main St., in Webb City.

“I was on the phone with a friend sitting in my car when I scratched off the ticket,” he recalled.  “I stated freaking out!”

The first-time Lottery winner thought he won $60,000 on the ticket.  It wasn’t until after reaching his bank that he realized he had forgot to scratch off the entire ticket.

“On my way to the bank, I called everyone and told them that I won $60,000,” he shared.  “Nobody believed me, so I had to call them back and tell them the new news.  I said, ‘Well, I didn’t win $60,000.  I won $100,000!’  They really didn’t know what to believe then!”

With the ticket in safe-keeping for the night at the bank, he had time to think about plans for the windfall before claiming his ticket at a Lottery office the following day.

“I’m going to take care of debt,” he said.  “I feel very relieved.  I still don’t think this is really happening.”

Thomure added that “dreams really can come true!”

"10X The Cash," a $5 ticket with a top prize of $100,000, officially began on May 1. To date, five top prizes, as well as thousands of prizes ranging from $5 to $20,000, remain in play.
