Climax Springs Man Wins $10,000 Powerball Prize

Story Photo audio icon Mason Jones of Climax Springs doesn’t think he’s on a roll, but he admits he’s been getting “awful lucky” lately.  The retired Navy man buys Quick Pick tickets for Powerball and Missouri Lotto every week.  In the last three months, he’s won $1,250, $75, $50 twice, and finally a $10,000 prize for matching four white-ball numbers and the Powerball number in the Oct. 9 Powerball drawing.

Jones, 69, who said he lives “40 miles from nowhere and plumb back in the sticks,” discovered his most recent win after returning to the store where he bought the ticket – Murphy Oil USA, 90 Cecil St., in Camdenton.

“I had them check it, and boy, she jumped up and down.  She came running out the door and hugged me,” recalled Jones.  “I said, ‘Hey I like this, whatever I won!’”

Jones, who has two Rat Terriers adopted from Dogwood Animal Shelter, said he donated some of his previous winnings to the shelter, and spent some on “other people’s dogs.”

“I just like animals,” he explained.

Plans for the latest windfall include putting a portion in savings and buying new tools.  Jones, who called his dogs “little kids,” has actual children that he puts to work when they visit.

“The rest of it,” said Jones, “I’m going to blow.”

Jones will continue playing the Lottery because he “wants to win the big one.”

“If you don’t play, you don’t win,” he said.

But Jones is more than satisfied with his current lucky streak.

“Anytime you win $10,000, it’s a good day,” he declared.

Powerball is a multi-lottery Numbers Game with jackpots that start at $20 million.  Drawings are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights.  For an extra $1 at the time of purchase, players can add the Power Play option and multiply any non-jackpot prizes by a Power Play number selected during the drawing.
