Blairstown Couple Surprised with $250,000 Mega Millions Prize
Joseph and Tammera Beaty of Blairstown are in the habit of buying regular Missouri Lottery tickets and scanning previous tickets during trips to the store. What they aren’t accustomed to hearing is, “You won,” and “I can’t cash it,” in reference to a single ticket. But that’s exactly what happened to the couple on Oct. 5 during a stop at County Petro, 217 N.W. Highway 7, in Clinton.
“We just go into the same station, and we get $10 (worth of tickets),” Tammera began.
Joseph contributed the order as, “$3 on Powerball, $3 on Mega Millions, $2 on Lotto and $2 for Show Me Cash.”
“Yesterday he went to town, and on the way home, I said, ‘Let’s stop at County Petro. I need hamburger buns.’ Otherwise, we wouldn’t have checked the tickets yet,” continued Tammera.
“I had won $10 on a Scratch-off ticket and $7, and I told him, ‘I’m going to buy 17 $1 tickets, and we’re going to win big on this one. We’re going to buy cows with it.’
“He handed me the Lottery tickets and said, ‘Here, check these, too.’ The guy checked them, and turned around and said, ‘You won.’ I said, ‘Yeah, right, what a Scratch-off ticket?’ The girl who works for him figured it out and goes, ‘You won $250,000!’”
Tammera was floored, and uttered, “No way.”
It took less than 24 hours for the Beatys to plan how they would spend the money and present the winning Mega Millions ticket for claim at the Springfield Lottery office.
“We are going to buy cows. We’re going to buy good cows!” declared Tammera.
The couple’s other plans include a sunroom with a fireplace and a trip to the Virgin Islands. Joseph, 65, has two sons that own a bar in St. John. Tammera, 51, said that with a new grandchild on the way, a trip has already been planned and that they would visit more often.
“We’ll make a couple of trips a year now to go see them,” she said. “We’ve flown first-class before, but we’ll definitely fly first-class from now on!
“But we probably won’t change the way we live or anything. We’ll be the same. I still sell eggs for $1.50 a dozen out the door.”
They’ll continue playing the Lottery as well.
“You can’t win if you don’t play,” said Tammera.
