Lottery Winner Almost Misses Out on $50,000 Prize

Nancy Barnhart of Peculiar is the latest top-prize winner on a Missouri Lottery “Crossword” Scratchers game.  Barnhart matched 11 complete words on her game puzzle, earning the $50,000 prize, but she didn’t realize how much she’d won and almost missed the chance to claim her prize.

“I bought it a long time ago – probably at least four or five months ago – and set it aside,” she explained of her winning ticket.  “I thought it was a winner of maybe $10, and it just got piled under some papers.”

Luckily, the doctor’s assistant is preparing for a move, and the ticket caught her eye again as she began packing.

“Just Monday of this week, I ran past it again,” she said.

Barnhart took the ticket to a Lottery retailer to have it scanned and learned that the prize was at least $600 when the clerk instructed her it would have to be claimed at a Missouri Lottery office.  She also noted that the current edition of “Crossword” is set to expire on the 23rd of this month.

It wasn’t until she presented her ticket at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office that Barnhart realized just how much she had won.

“I’m on Cloud Nine here,” she said.  “I am shaking so bad, I can hardly stand it.”

Barnhart says she plans to pay bills and take a “little trip” with her winnings, and the rest will be invested.

“I feel like the world is totally lifted off my shoulders,” she concluded.

Barnhart purchased her winning “Crossword” ticket at Casey’s General Store, 117 E. North St., in Peculiar.  The $3 game officially began July 18, 2009, and expires Oct. 23.  Information on remaining prizes for “Crossword” and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be found at Molottery.com.
