'Pure Gold' Luck: Lightning Strikes Four Times for Iowa Man

Story Photo Michael Mullins of Moravia, Iowa, has the nature of his occupation and a lot of luck to thank for his fourth Missouri Lottery Scratchers win.  The 60-year-old truck driver said he “always buys Lottery tickets” when he’s in Missouri delivering feed.

Between deliveries on Sept. 29, Mullins stopped for fuel and a Missouri Lottery “Pure Gold” Scratchers ticket.  He uncovered the top prize while sitting in his truck at Ayerco, U.S. Highway 61, Rural Route 1, in Alexandria.

“I got in the truck, and I saw the ‘all win gold bar,’” he began.  “I assumed the ticket was a $20 winner.”

The lucky Iowan soon realized that the ticket held a $100,000 prize.

“I called my son, and then I called my boss,” he said.  “Nobody believed me!”

The disbelief could’ve been because his win marked the fourth time he’s taken home a Missouri Lottery prize.

“I won $10,000 about eight years ago,” he shared.  “I also won $1,000 once and $800.”

He had “three more loads to deliver” after he revealed the top prize, so he made a quick stop.

“I drove to my sister’s house to put the ticket somewhere safe until I could claim it the next day,” he said.

As a repeat-winner, he knew that he’d need to claim his prize at a Missouri Lottery regional office.

The next morning, Mullins and his sister, Rose, traveled to Missouri Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to claim the prize.

“He promised to get me lunch for driving him,” said Rose with a laugh.  “I think that I’ll make him get me dinner now, too!”

The father of two said his daughter is getting married next year, so the prize money will “help out with the wedding.”

“I might get a small camper or new vehicle, too,” he added.  “I haven’t thought too much about it yet.”

Mullins is the first player to claim a top prize of $100,000 in "Pure Gold," a $5 Scratchers game that officially began on Sept. 25.
