“The Optimistic 10,” a group of co-workers from the Hallsville area, has been named the Missouri Lottery’s October Team of the Month, as part of the Lottery’s Captains Club promotion.

Team members work together at Schneider Electric, a manufacturer of electrical distribution products, assembling molded case circuit breakers.  Members include:  Sara Petersen of Ashland; Tracy Thomas of Boonville; Thy Peng and Evelyn Wilhite, both of Columbia; Sherry Elkin, Alan Parnell and Danelle Rakes, all of Hallsville; Henrietta Schoutten of Harrisburg; and Sharon Black and Karen Russell, both of New Franklin.

“The Optimistic 10” play the Lottery’s Lotto and Powerball games twice each week.

“We have played every week and every draw since our inception” explained teammate Parnell.  “Our beginning is believed to have occurred sometime in the late 1980s.  It started with one individual that collected the money and bought tickets, and other individuals have since taken over the reins.  There are three ‘originals’ left on the team.”

Today, the group rotates purchasing duties, buying their Quick Pick tickets from a variety of local retailers.  To date, their largest win has been $100.

“Our small weekly winnings, we accumulate in a kitty and usually everyone plays for free the last five weeks of the year,” Parnell continued.

He notes that thoughts of retirement and being “debt-free to do as you please” are a common theme when dreaming about a big Lottery win.

“Who wants to miss out if you do win?” he said of teammates’ continued participation.  “I think it is the thought that it could happen!”
