Philadelphia Man Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize
A Philadelphia man who won $10,000 on a Missouri Lottery “Mega MONOPOLY™” Scratchers ticket has plans to spend some money on a car to crash – in a demolition derby. Jay Hawkins, 25, bought the winning ticket on Sept. 24 at Pick-A-Dilly, 618 S. Main St., in Palmyra. He said his girlfriend, Sara, suggested he buy the “Mega MONOPOLY™” game.
“We actually just got done with a wedding rehearsal. We stopped by to get a soda and stuff, and just got a ticket on the side,” recalled Hawkins.
They scratched the ticket in the parking lot in case it was a $10 winner and he “could run back in and cash it,” but they discovered it was in fact a $10,000 winner.
“I was friends with the cashier who works there, you know. I talk to her every time I go in there. So I went in and showed her, and she got pretty excited,” said Hawkins.
Hawkins is no stranger to winning. He won $5,000 on a “Crossword” Scratchers ticket the week before and $1,000 on a “Big Bang Bucks” ticket back in June.
“I generally start out with the $2 tickets, and then if I win, I go up and get the bigger tickets,” he relayed.
Hawkins is employed as a service technician at Beilstein RV in Palmyra. He uses skills from the job to follow a passion – racing in demolition derbies. He said he would use the windfall to pay off his truck, and then some of it to fix up a 1985 Grand Marquis he bought to wreck.
“The first heet I ran in two years ago, the very first hit, I backed up right on top of a guy’s car,” he recalled. “It can be anything that can take you out.”
Nothing will take him out of winning more in the Lottery.
“I’ve had pretty decent luck through the years doing that,” he said.
But he offered this advice for other players.
“Don’t play off the same roll I played on,” Hawkins said with a laugh.
