Couple Celebrates 38th Anniversary with $10,000 Mega Millions Prize
Donald and Nancy Hummer of Camp Point, Ill., both surprised each other for their 38th wedding anniversary. Nancy gave her husband a trip to Las Vegas, and Donald gave his wife a Mega Millions ticket worth $10,000.
"He forgot to buy me a gift," Nancy said with a laugh. "He won on that ’Mega’ ticket, so that was a great gift for both of us!"
The Hummers discovered the ticket was a winner the day before their wedding anniversary after celebrating with an early dinner.
"We stopped for gas, and Nancy wanted a soda," he said. "We both went in the store to check the ticket, and that’s when the clerk said we won."
Nancy "couldn’t believe it," and she asked the clerk to scan the ticket again. After confirming the winning Quick Pick ticket from the Aug. 31 drawing for a second time, the couple began "calling everyone" with the news.
The parents of three and grandparents of five with twins on the way said they "couldn’t be happier" about the prize.
"I’m going Christmas shopping for the grandkids!" said Nancy. Donald added that they will also use a portion of the windfall to "put a new roof on the house."
"It was definitely a great anniversary that we’ll always remember," she noted.
The Hummers purchased the winning ticket at Country Market Express, 8455 Highway 24, in Taylor. The winning numbers from the Aug. 31 drawing were: 10, 20, 29, 47 and 48. The Megaball was 38.
is a multi-state game that features jackpots starting at $12 million. Drawings are held on Tuesday and Friday nights at 10 p.m.
