Terry and Ester Abernathy of St. Louis (63138*) have been married for 21 years, and Terry considers himself a lucky man. Not just lucky in love, but also lucky at playing the Lottery. He pocketed a windfall of $6,000 on Aug. 15 when his numbers were selected in the Missouri Lottery’s Pick 4 evening drawing. Abernathy has plans for his winnings.
“I want to have a nice date with my wife,” confided Abernathy, grandfather of three. “It’s our 21st anniversary, and I want to make it special.”
Abernathy, 50, likes to play quads, the same four numbers, when he buys Pick 4 tickets. His lucky number on Aug. 15 was six when the combination 6-6-6-6 was drawn. It’s only the third time in Missouri Lottery history that quads have been drawn for Pick 4.
“Quads are my favorite. I was watching the draw on television, and when I saw all sixes, I knew I had won the jackpot,” he explained.
Abernathy was celebrating in front of his television when his wife heard him.
“My wife thought I was losing it,” he remembers.
Abernathy purchased his winning ticket at Dirt Cheap Cigarettes & Beer, 1401 Dunn Road, in St. Louis.
The warehouse worker for Elementis Specialties plans to continue playing the Lottery, but added he will “lay off quads for a while.”
“They don’t happen often, so I’ll let a few weeks go by before I play them again,” declared Abernathy.
Abernathy may want to switch to Pick 3. Triples occurred on the Aug. 18 evening draw, when the winning numbers 1-1-1 were drawn.
