$20,000 Lottery Win Provides Cushion for Couple

Story Photo audio icon Four times is a charm for one lucky Rolla man.  John Wessner, 62, won $1,000 twice earlier this year on two different Missouri Lottery Scratchers games, and last week, he won a $100 prize.  While cashing in the $100 prize, he decided to test "lady luck" one more time.  He ended up adding another $20,000 to his bank account.

Wessner’s wife, Barbara, won $100 a total of three times playing the "Mega MONOPOLY™" Scratchers game in the past week.  After witnessing Barbara’s good fortune, John thought that it was only a matter of time until a big winner was uncovered.  His wife wasn’t so sure.

"She said, ’Fat chance we’ll ever see that!’" he recalled with a laugh.

Determined to prove her wrong, he bought two "Mega MONOPOLY™" Scratchers tickets at Kroger Grocery Store, 605 W. Fourth St., in Rolla.

"I scratched the first one off, and it was a loser," he began.  "I scratched the second one off, and I saw the hat!"

His first thought was, "I need to get home and tell her," he explained about notifying his wife.

"Sure enough, I took it home, and she looked at the ticket, but she still wouldn’t believe it," he said.

After a little convincing, "She broke down crying."

The win provides "a little cushion" for the couple.  James, a retired carpenter, said his wife will retire in December.

"If we want to go do something, we can go do it," he said.  "We can use that money to go do it on."

The Wessners, who celebrated 41 years of marriage in March, said they plan to let their two grown children know about the win in a unique way.

"They get on the Internet, and they look at the website and the pictures of people who won," he shared, referring to their decision to allow their daughters to discover the news themselves.  "I want them to be shocked!"

He added that they will keep playing "Mega MONOPOLY™," because "$2 million is still out there yet.  Maybe we’ll hit it again!"

John summed up his win by saying, "It was a good day."  Not only did he win a $20,000 prize, but his wife "went to another place in town, and came home with a $500 winner" the same day.

"Mega MONOPOLY™," a $10 game with a top prize of $2 million, officially began on Aug. 29, 2009.
