Kirksville Man's Fourth Filled with Financial Fireworks

Story Photo audio icon A Kirksville man is planning a family trip after winning a $25,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket.  William McCoy, 33, had an extra $2 in his pocket, so he decided to see if he could ignite some fireworks of his own on the fourth of July.

The first-time Lottery winner bought one "Money Money Money" ticket at Kum & Go, 503 S. Franklin St., in Kirksville.  He returned home to scratch the ticket.  As soon as the father of three realized he won, he shared the news with his children.

"They were excited!" he recalled.  "I told them, ’Now, be quiet until I tell your mom.’"

His wife was sleeping at the time of the win.

"I went up and handed it (ticket) to her, and I said, ’Here, tell me what I won,’" he began.  "She woke up, and I don’t think she believed it at first.  It doesn’t happen everyday, but it happened!"

He added that his kids are already in the process of making their Christmas lists, but he has his own plans for the prize money.

"I’m going to take the whole family to a Cardinals game this summer," he revealed, referring to watching his favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals, take the field at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

"I never figured I’d win something like that," he said.  "It’s pretty cool for $2!"
