St. Ann Couple Uses Lottery Win For Medical Expenses

Story Photo audio icon A couple from St. Ann will extend their health benefits after winning $20,000 on a Missouri Lottery "Mega MONOPOLY™" Scratchers ticket.  David and Elizabeth Pursley purchased the winning Scratchers ticket while shopping at the St. Ann Market, 3218 Ashby Road, in St. Ann.  As they were driving away from the store, David discovered they had a winning ticket.
"He’s like, ’Pull over, pull over.  I think we won!’" Elizabeth recounted.
The couple went to a convenience store to check the ticket, but Elizabeth still didn’t believe their good fortune until claiming the ticket the following day, June 22, at the St. Louis Lottery office.
"It was hard to believe," she said.  "We’ve had some disabilities and some medical issues, so this was really, really good news."
David, 51, suffered a stroke six months ago that has left him unable to return to work.  Formerly employed by The Lighthouse for the Blind in St. Louis, he will continue to volunteer with the organization.  Elizabeth said the winnings will help them continue something else from his former employer.
"We’re going to put it away and use it to pay his COBRA for the next two years," she said.
COBRA, short for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, enables workers who have lost their jobs to continue health coverage under their former employer, but the individual must pay the premiums.

"It really does allow us to have a life," Elizabeth said.
Although the couple doesn’t play the Lottery a lot, Elizabeth said they’ll probably continue to buy Scratchers tickets.  She said they like the "Mega MONOPOLY™" game because it’s familiar and easy to understand.
"We usually either buy Monopoly or Cardinals," she explained.  "On Sunday, we bought six Cardinal tickets because we gave them away for Father’s Day.
"We like the scratch-offs," Elizabeth continued.  "They’re fun.  Just don’t play over your head, but enjoy it."
"Mega MONOPOLY™" is a $10 game that officially began Aug. 29, 2009.  The game features a top prize of $2 million.  Out of six top prizes available, four remained unclaimed.  Players can track prizes remaining for this and every Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at Molottery.com.
