Clerk's Suggestion Leads Player to Mega Millions Prize

Story Photo audio icon Terry Stone of Centertown didn’t plan on buying a Mega Millions ticket for the June 22 drawing.  A suggestion from a clerk at Schulte’s Fresh Foods, 1904 Southwest Blvd. in Jefferson City, prompted him to make the $1 Quick Pick purchase.

"Usually on Tuesdays, I buy a Powerball and a Lotto," he began.  "The lady (clerk) asked me if I wanted a Mega ticket, and I said, ’Yeah, I’ll take a Mega ticket, too.’  I usually don’t play it."

While on his way to work a few days later, the United States Postal Service employee stopped for gas and remembered that he had the Mega Millions ticket in his car.  He couldn’t believe his eyes when he scanned the ticket.

"I didn’t think it was right," he said, referring to the moment he saw that he won a $10,000 prize.  "I checked it again, and it said the same thing!"

Stone, 65, intends to use the windfall to save for retirement.

He added that he’ll also "buy a new tractor for the farm."

When asked to sum up his thoughts about the win, he replied, "I’m just happy about it!"

Stone matched four white-ball numbers and the Megaball® in the June 22 Mega Millions drawing.

The winning numbers from the drawing were:  12, 17, 21, 23, 49 and the Megaball® was 24.

Mega Millions is a multi-state game that features jackpots starting at $12 million.  Drawings are held on Tuesday and Friday nights at 10 p.m.
