Jackpot Ticket Provides 'A Lot of Smiles' for Vietnam Vet

“It’s about time; I play often,” teased a St. Charles man as he redeemed a Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash ticket worth $65,000.  Vincent Cummo, 64, matched all five numbers during the June 16 drawing to win the jackpot prize.

The Vietnam veteran – who served four years in the Marines, including two tours of duty in Vietnam – purchased his winning ticket at Hucks Food Store, 1020 Country Club Road, in St. Charles.  Close to home, he said the store is a regular stop “for odds and ends like milk and gas.”

He knew something was in the air, though, when he made a return visit to the store.

“I go, and they had a sign in the window,” he explained of the signage indicating the winning jackpot ticket had been sold at that location.  “The manager said, ‘We’re trying to figure out who it is.’”

Cummo pulled out his ticket, checked it and announced, “It’s me!”

“She said, ‘It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person,’ and then everyone started screaming,” he added.

Nice indeed, as Cummo proceeded to give each employee at the store a small token of his appreciation.

“One girl hugged me,” he shared.  “If you can make people happy, that’s what it’s all about.”

The father of three said his grown kids “jumped up and down” when he shared the good news with them.

“And they jumped even more when I told them I was giving each of them $5,000,” he laughed.  “I got a lot of smiles out of this!

“You know what feels good?” Cummo concluded.  “When you go to bed at night and don’t have to worry about the phone bill.  I’ve always lived paycheck to paycheck, so I’m in a good spot right now.”

Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot that starts at $50,000 and increases by at least $5,000 at each daily drawing.  Cummo used Quick Pick to select his winning numbers:  7, 8, 11, 15 and 27.  His ticket was the 95th Show Me Cash jackpot-winning ticket since the game began on Sept. 8, 2008.
