Lottery Win Puts Long-Awaited Honeymoon in the Works

Story Photo audio icon Winnings from the Missouri Lottery’s Show Me Cash jackpot are being used to fund an overdue celebration.  Larry and Stella Knipfel, a Mexico couple who have been married for 34 years, never took a honeymoon, but their $55,000 jackpot prize from the June 2 drawing will help send the couple packing.

It wasn’t until a week after the drawing that the Knipfels realized that one of the tickets hanging on their refrigerator was a winner.

"I usually just wait until there is a pile of them on there with a magnet, and I pull them down and check them on the Internet," said Stella, who added that they buy tickets twice a week.  "I had seven tickets.  I checked them all, and they were all duds."
When she got to the last ticket, something happened that she’d never experienced.

"I was circling off the numbers that I had, and then when I got to the last number it dawned on me that I had circled all the numbers," she recalled.  "It is a weird feeling after all these years of circling one number and putting an ’X’ across it and pitching it, to circle all of the numbers!"

Stella shared the news with her husband, who replied, "You made a mistake."

After Larry checked the numbers and got the same result, the couple called the retail location to verify the numbers over the phone.  Upon receiving confirmation that the numbers were correct, Stella began to think, "We might have really won it!"

The couple "tried to go to sleep" that evening, but their excitement made it a restless night.

The grandparents of eight plan to use the prize money to pay off their home and go on a very special trip.

"I’d like to take the honeymoon we never did get," she revealed.

The first-time Lottery winners said they will continue playing Show Me Cash, because "the big one is still out there."

The Knipfels used Quick Pick to select the winning numbers from the June 2 drawing, which were: 16, 23, 28, 35 and 39.

Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing.  The Knipfels won the 93rd Show Me Cash jackpot in the game, which began on Sept. 8, 2008.
