Moberly residents Sharon Crosswhite and her husband, Steve, will always remember June 11, 2010. Not only was it the couple’s 39th wedding anniversary, but the Club Keno numbers Sharon played that night – which included a nod to their nuptials – brought in a $25,002 Missouri Lottery prize.
Ironically, the 57-year-old wasn’t going to go to the Wabash Inn at 111 E. Coates in Moberly that night, but she decided to take a short break from her side job of baking cakes to celebrate her anniversary.
“I thought, ‘I’ll play a couple games while I’m in here,’” she recalled.
Faithful to the numbers she’s played for more than 10 years, Crosswhite selected 5, 6, 8, 11, 50, 52 and 71, which commemorate the couple’s birthdays and wedding anniversary.
“My husband always tells me to stick to my numbers,” she added.
It turned out to be good advice and laid the groundwork for a memorable anniversary gift.
In the game where players choose how many different numbers they want to play from 1 to 10 (also called “spots”), Crosswhite played a 7-spot game and waited as 20 numbers from a field of 1-80 were chosen in a random, computerized Club Keno drawing.
In an earlier game, the monitor showed just a few of her chosen numbers, and she was afraid she’d “killed my numbers.”
Luckily, that wasn’t the case. Not only did she end up matching all seven of her numbers to the numbers drawn, but she also matched the Bulls-Eye number of 52 to win even more, raising the grand total to $25,002.
Crosswhite said most of the money “will definitely go to pay bills that I owe, and I’ll put some back in savings, too.”
