Ruth Lewis of Moberly credits a mistake with helping her bring home a $6,000 prize playing the Missouri Lottery’s Pick 4 game.
In the twice-daily game that allows players to choose four numbers, as well as the “type of play” – the required order in which winning numbers must be drawn – Lewis said she accidentally marked the wrong box. The regular Pick 4 player normally chooses “straight/box,” which offers two chances to win: a $3,250 prize if numbers are drawn in exact order; or $125 if all numbers are drawn in any order. On May 9, however, Lewis chose “straight” play, which offers only one way to win but increases the prize amount. The straight play she selected required all four of her numbers to be drawn in exact order, earning her a $6,000 prize.
Using her daughter’s wedding anniversary as inspiration for her number selections – 1, 0, 0 and 3 for Oct. 3 – the warehouse worker was thrilled when she realized her “mistake” had led to a larger prize.
“I was running through the house yelling, ‘Hallelujah,’” she said. “I played it wrong, but I’m not complaining. I might have been mad if it came out opposite.”
Along with some repairs to her house, Lewis plans to share her good fortune with family.
“I’m going to bless somebody else, because the Lord blessed me,” she asserted.
Pick 4 drawings are held at 12:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. daily.
