St. Louis Family Claims $5.5 Million Lotto Jackpot From April 14
A St. Louis family recently came forward to claim the $5.5 million Missouri Lotto jackpot from the April 14 drawing. Louis and Joyce Nowak said they will share some of the prize with their three grown children: Caroline Bertani, 44, and Pamela Reckamp, 42, both of St. Louis; and Andrew Nowak, 38, of Los Angeles, Calif.
Joyce Nowak, 66, stopped at Shop ‘n Save, 7355 Manchester Road in Maplewood, around noon on April 14 “just to buy a ticket.” She let the computer select the winning numbers, which were: 11, 23, 28, 34, 36 and 43. The third combination on her $5 ticket was the winner.
“It was very exciting,” she said, recalling when she discovered the win at a different Shop ‘n Save location on April 15.
Nowak said besides sharing some of their prize with their three grown children, they also plan to travel.
“I’m hoping to do a trip to Germany in the fall,” she said. “I like to travel.”
Another place she would like to visit is Yellowstone National Park.
Nowak also said the couple may look at changing residences.
“We’d like a change of scenery,” she said.
The couple also keeps a list of things they would like or need, and now Joyce says that “instead of one at a time, it will be on a much speedier time line.”
Nowak says the rest of the prize money will go into a family trust.
Joyce and Louis Nowak are both retired. Joyce formerly worked in computer graphics, and Louis, 70, is a retired sales manager.
Along with the Nowak’s win, Shop ‘n Save will receive a bonus check for $55,000, which is equal to 1 percent of the jackpot, for selling the winning Lotto ticket.
The Nowaks hold the 196th winning Lotto
jackpot ticket. The Lottery has sold 297 winning tickets worth $1 million or more since it started in 1986.
