Erika Van Houten of Moberly recalls her eagerness to purchase a Missouri Lottery ticket on her 18th birthday just few months ago. That ticket wasn’t a winner, but the “5X the Fortune” Scratchers game she purchased on April 24 provided the high school senior with a $5,000 cash prize.
“It’s the best graduation gift ever,” she beamed, explaining that she plans to save some of her winnings for a car and some to attend Moberly Area Community College.
“I just had two bucks and saw it and thought, ‘This one looks good,’” Van Houten said of her decision to purchase that particular game from the store’s selection.
After having several people look at the ticket to make sure “it was for real,” she followed the wise advice of her father and signed the back of the ticket and kept it safely tucked away until she could travel to Jefferson City to claim her prize at Lottery headquarters.
Van Houten purchased her winning “5X the Fortune” ticket at Bratcher Market, 301 S. Morley St., in Moberly. The $2 game officially began March 27.
The Missouri Lottery generates nearly $1 billion a year in sales and contributes more than $200 million annually to Missouri public education programs, including the A+ Scholarship Program, Special Education Excess Costs and Vocational Technical Schools.
