Wentzville Woman 'Thinking Hot Tub' After $10,000 Lottery Win
"I don’t normally buy any," said a Wentzville woman, referring to her decision to buy a Missouri Lottery "Wheel of Fortune®" Scratchers ticket on April 19. However, Beverly Kersting, a clerk at Pete’s Drive-In, 1009 E. Pearce Blvd. in Wentzville, was glad that she broke her routine, because she became $10,000 richer.
"A lady came in and wanted four tickets, and so I pulled them out," she began. "She goes, ’Not those.’ So, I gave her the ones that she wanted, and those four were still hanging out there. Somebody came in and took two, and then they took another one. One was still hanging out, so I thought I’d buy that."
The mother of two said the "Wheel of Fortune®" ticket was the "first one I ever bought."
Kersting, 56, scratched the ticket while on a break during her shift.
"I took it (ticket) to my boss, and I’m like, ’Will you check this for me?’ She ran it through the machine, and it said it was a winner!"
As for how she spent the rest of her shift, she said she "smiled a lot" until she was able to go home and call her family and friends to share the news.
She noted that she wasn’t sure how she’d spend the prize money, because there are "too many options," but one idea she has is to possible buy a hot tub.
The first-time Lottery winner said she was "afraid to leave it (ticket) at home while I wasn’t there," so she kept it her purse until she was able to claim it at a Lottery office.
"It was just really fun to keep getting it (ticket) out and looking at it and making sure it was still real, and I wasn’t dreaming," she added with a laugh.
"Wheel of Fortune®,
" a $3 game with a top prize of $50,000, officially began on Dec. 9, 2009. Deborah Schehl’s luck is improving after following the signs to a $77,000 payday.
