Columbia Woman has 'Mega' Monday with $100,000 Lottery Win

Story Photo audio icon Some people want weekends to last longer, but one Columbia woman couldn’t wait for Monday to come.  That’s because Katie McElvain, 36, uncovered a $100,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery "Mega Bucks" Scratchers ticket on Sun., April 25.  She could barely sleep that night, because she was "so excited to claim my prize" the next day at a Lottery office.

"I had a little extra cash in my pocket," she began.  "I was on my way back home from work and decided to buy some Scratchers tickets.  I got home and scratched it off.  I couldn’t believe what I was reading.  I had to have my daughter verify it."

The office manager said she checked her ticket "six or seven times" and returned to Shriji Mart, 5701 St. Charles Road in Columbia, to scan the ticket to make sure she "wasn’t seeing things."

After all of that confirmation, McElvain said she still "couldn’t believe it."

The mother of two plans to "take my kids on a trip that is long over due" with the prize money.

She added that, "My son wants some roller skates," so that is also on the list, as well as paying off her car and putting a portion of the windfall towards her mortgage.

"Mega Bucks," a $5 game with a top prize of $100,000, officially began on Sept. 26, 2009.
