Sisters Surprised with $6,002 Lottery Prize

Story Photo audio icon A Saturday shopping trip ended with more than bagging a few good bargains.  Esther Zimmer, 53, of Hermann, and her sister, Deborah Eldridge of Owensville, were wrapping up a long day together on April 24 when the duo decided to take a detour before heading home.

"We went to get cigarettes, but the line was too long," she recalled, referring to a stop at Wal-Mart.

Long lines at one store prompted her to buy Missouri Lottery tickets at another store, Old Dutch Mill, 1988 Highway 50 in Owensville, a twist of fate which made her $6,002 richer.

The first-time Lottery winner bought a few different Scratchers games, but her decision to buy three "Triple Moneybags" tickets is what made her a winner.

"The first one was the $6,000," she said.  "I won $2 on one of the others."

She immediately thought, "This can’t be true!"

The New Haven Care Center employee said she plans to put her winnings into the bank to "save for retirement."

"Triple Moneybags," a $1 game with a top prize of $6,000, officially began on Dec. 25, 2009.  Players have the chance to win up to five times on a single ticket.
