Fulton Woman's Friends Calling Her "Lucky" After Lottery Win
Most people know what to expect out of long bus trips – numerous hours of riding in a confined space with brief stops along the way. It was business as usual for Mildred and John Allen of Fulton when they loaded a bus headed from Jefferson City to Tunica, Miss., for a weekend trip.
During one of the bus stops, Mildred made a decision that turned an ordinary trip into an extraordinary one. She bought a Missouri Lottery "Triple Payout" Scratchers ticket at Perryville Motomart, 1300 S. Perryville Blvd., in Perryville. The outcome prompted the bus passengers to give her a nickname.
"I scratched it (ticket) off, and I couldn’t believe it," she recalled. "After I showed everybody on the bus, they called me ’lucky’ all day."
The first thing she did after uncovering the $1,000 prize was sign her ticket and "put it in my purse, so I wouldn’t lose it."
The win came along with a few other exciting events that reaffirmed her nickname. While on the way home, she won $20 in a drawing and $15 more playing bingo. To top it all off, her 85th birthday is next week.
In terms of plans for the windfall, she said she will "give my husband half of it" and purchase new eye glasses.
"I feel good," she added. "I’m just happy that I won!"
," a $2 game with a top prize of $30,000, officially began on Aug. 29, 2009.
