West Plains Woman Becomes Instant Millionaire on Way to Work
A stop before work turned a West Plains woman into an instant millionaire. Carolyn Girdley, 54, "wanted to get a few things," so she drove to Country Mart, 705 Kentucky Ave., in West Plains. While grocery shopping, she passed a Missouri Lottery ticket dispenser and thought, "Oh, I’ll just put $20 in it." She selected a "$5,000,000 Cash Extravaganza" Scratchers ticket. That decision proved to be a profitable one, as she uncovered a $1 million prize.
Girdley, an administrative assistant, "didn’t believe it," so she made another detour before heading to the office.
"I had to go to my husband and let him see it and verify that I wasn’t seeing something that wasn’t there," she recalled.
The couple was "very ecstatic" about the win, but they noted they are not new to the idea of winning. Both Girdley and her husband won several $1,000 prizes in the past. Girdley was also part of a group of 17 people who split a $10,000 Powerball prize in 2008.
She added that splitting the $10,000 Powerball prize was nice, but becoming a millionaire is "very exciting." The couple plans to pay bills and share their winnings with their three children.
"$5,000,000 Cash Extravaganza
" is a $20 game that officially began on Jan. 23. It features 13 prizes from $1 to $5 million and offers more than $120 million in total prizes.
