Cairo School Cooks Up Lottery Team of the Month

The Missouri Lottery sends congratulations to “The Happy Cookers Plus One,” a group of Powerball playing friends and co-workers at Northeast R-IV School in Cairo.  The team has been named the Missouri Lottery’s April Team of the Month.

As the official team, “The Happy Cookers Plus One” will receive a prize package of Lottery merchandise and will also be highlighted at Molottery.com.  As their group’s name implies, four of the team members are cooks at the school, and the “plus one” refers to the lunchroom clerk who also serves as the team’s leader.  Team members include:  Carol Cunningham, team captain, and Sharon DeMint, both of Cairo; Janet Pagliai and Doris Williams, both of Excello; and Lisa Nelson of Jacksonville.

According to Cunningham, “I watched a show on TV about a group of cooks winning the lottery, and I thought, ‘If they can do it, why can’t we?’ So we started up two years ago and play $5 every Saturday.”

So far the group has only scored small wins, which they use to buy additional Quick Pick tickets for the next week’s drawing.  Cunningham teased that if they hit a big jackpot prize, “Everyone should hear the cries of joy all the way to Jefferson City’s Lottery headquarters – which is 75 miles away!

“It’s always fun to talk about what we would do if we were to win, what we would buy and what trips we’d take.  It’s nice to dream this way, and we sure do have fun,” she added.

Cunningham summed it up with a simple, “Someone has to win!”

Each month, the Missouri Lottery recognizes a players group as part of the Lottery Captains promotion.  Tell us about your team on the Lottery Captains Page at Molottery.com. To learn more about Powerball, visit the Lottery’s Powerball page
