James “Jim” Wheelbarger’s lunch breaks are usually spent at Hood’s Service Center BP Amoco store in Bois D’Arc. A truck driver from Bolivar, he likes to meet co-workers for a quick bite to eat and play Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets while they relax over their noon time meal. On Wednesday, March 3, Wheelbarger’s meal was very rich.
“My buddies were playing the ‘Silver 7’s’ ticket and one guy won $10, the other won $15. I had some extra lunch money so I asked Carol, the clerk, to give me one,” explained Wheelbarger. “I started scratching and I saw a $500 prize first, and I was thinking ‘I just won a pretty good prize.’ I scratched some more, and the next prize was $10,000. I started scratching a whole lot faster after that.”
Wheelbarger, a frequent Scratchers player, won the top prize of $77,000 with the Missouri Lottery’s “Silver 7’s” Scratchers ticket.
“The whole store just went quiet when we realized I’d won that much money,” said Wheelbarger.
Wheelbarger, 42, is a driver for United Parcel Service in Strafford. He called his wife at work to deliver the news.
“I didn’t believe him at first. I still don’t believe it, not until I see the actual check,” stated his wife, Holly.
Wheelbarger plans to complete some remodeling to his home and buy new tires for his wife’s car. They may also take a family vacation to Destin, Florida, with their five children.
“Silver 7’s” is a $5 game that offers more than 30 prizes from $10,000 to $77,000 and the chance to win up to 20 times on a single ticket.
