Patsy Raleigh of Canton purchases a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket every day at various retailers in her area. She recently used the small winnings she received carrying out that routine to purchase a “Wheel of Fortune®” ticket, a move that yielded the retired cook a top prize of $50,000.
“I generally play ‘Crossword,’ ‘Bingo’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune,’” she said of her game preferences. “I’ll do a $1 game every once in a while.”
It’s also part of Raleigh’s routine not to scratch her tickets while still at the store.
“I took the ticket home,” she shared about the day she won her prize. “My husband was reading the paper, and I was watching television when I scratched it. I kept going over and over it, and finally, I said, ‘Larry, I think I just won $50,000!’”
Though he didn’t immediately believe the good fortune his wife’s ticket revealed, upon further inspection, he advised her to “get it to town and get it checked out.” Raleigh then signed the back of her ticket and kept it in a safe place until she was able to make the trip to Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to claim her prize on Feb. 25.
Continuing her practice of buying Scratchers tickets at a variety of locations, she stopped to purchase two more “Wheel of Fortune®” tickets before leaving the Lottery office.
“I’m a fiend,” she teased. “What would you do if I won another $50,000?”
Assured that Lottery staff loves to see winners, Raleigh continued out the door, keeping intact her tradition of waiting to scratch her tickets.
Wheel of Fortune ® is a $3 game that officially began Dec. 9, 2009. Raleigh’s ticket, purchased at Casey’s General Store, 114 S. 4th St. in Canton, held the second $50,000 prize redeemed for the game, which so far has awarded more than $4.6 million in total prizes to Missouri Lottery players.
Through March 30, eligible non-winning tickets may be entered in the “Wheel of Fortune® Second-Chance Promotion” for a chance to win trips for two to Hollywood to audition to be a contestant on TV’s Wheel of Fortune® game show, as well as cash prizes of $900, $600 and $300.
