St. James Woman Uncovers $20,000 Prize

Story Photo audio icon A stop for an energy drink before work provided a St. James woman with an opportunity to become a Missouri Lottery winner.  On a whim, Brianne Hodge decided to add a "Mega Bucks" Scratchers ticket to her purchase.
"I just decided, ’Hey, give me that ticket.’  I don’t usually buy them," explained Hodge.
Hodge, 30, bought the ticket at Spurgeon’s 66 Service, 304 Jefferson St., in St. James.  She continued to work at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center where she scratched the ticket in the parking lot.  She soon realized the ticket was a $20,000 winner.
"I took about a quadruple take and still didn’t believe it.  So, one of my friends was sitting in the car next to me and I told her to look at it," said Hodge.
Still in disbelief, Hodge called her husband, Justin, while she returned to the store.  There, the clerks scanned the ticket and once again confirmed her good fortune.
"It took my breath away, I guess."  She added, "I’m still in shock."
The Hodges indicated they would use the money to pay bills, which will help put them in a better position to build a house later this year.
"Mega Bucks," a $5 ticket that officially began Sept. 26, 2009, features a top prize of $100,000.
